Tokamak Energy is searching for young fusion pioneers to become its first team of engineering technician apprentices.
The Milton Park-based company has teamed up with nationally-recognised Oxfordshire Advanced Skills (OAS) to create exciting new apprenticeship opportunities as part of its mission to demonstrate clean, grid-ready fusion power by the early 2030s.
The successful candidates will learn from Tokamak Energy’s world-leading fusion experts, plus gain the academic qualifications, skills and experience needed to launch their careers during the four-year level 3 apprenticeship.
Training will take place at the specialist OAS training centre at UK Atomic Energy Authority’s Culham Campus, where Tokamak Energy recently announced it will build its advanced prototype fusion device, ST80-HTS. The company is also set to start the process of hiring its first business administrator apprentice.
Jane Shannon, Tokamak Energy’s HR director, said: “At Tokamak Energy, we are committed to building talent as we work towards delivering clean, limitless energy. As the fusion industry continues to expand and diversify, finding and inspiring the best people to help achieve our mission is critical for us. We look forward to speaking with interested candidates and welcoming more apprentices to this exciting company, which continues to grow towards commercial fusion.”
In December 2022, Wantage MP David Johnston launched Tokamak Energy’s first STEM outreach programme to help inspire the next generation of fusion energy engineers and scientists.
Mr Johnston MP said: “Tokamak Energy is leading the way globally on commercialising fusion energy which will be a crucial part of the next generation’s net zero energy future.”
Tokamak Energy recruited its first apprentice, Joel-James Adams, into the health and safety team last year. The company also offers student placement and internships, as well as PhD sponsorship opportunities working with UK and international universities which have fusion-related openings in science and engineering.
