Tokamak Energy appoints Samer Jarkasy as first Chief Capital Markets Officer

Tokamak Energy has appointed Professor Samer Jarkasy as its first Chief Capital Markets Officer.

He will lead the capital markets operations and engagement with investors of the Oxford-based company to support plans to deliver clean fusion energy in the 2030s through the combined development of spherical tokamaks with high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets. He started with Tokamak Energy in June 2023.

Samer’s portfolio career includes lecturing part-time in investment management as Professor of Practice in Finance at Warwick Business School, University of Warwick, and Associate Fellow at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.

Before moving from the City of London to build his portfolio career as a private investor, board advisor, lecturer and to spend time with his family, Samer was a Managing Director at Winton Group/Winton Capital Management – one of the world’s largest and most successful global hedge fund firms during the nine years he worked there.

Warrick Matthews, Tokamak Energy MD, said: “Samer has extensive capital markets experience and a proven track record of raising funds. He will lead and strengthen all our fundraising and interactions with capital markets, and bring a new dimension to our leadership team as we drive forward plans to deliver clean, secure, affordable fusion energy in the 2030s.”

Samer added: “I am overjoyed to join Tokamak Energy and help this incredibly talented team solve one of humanity’s greatest challenges. Delivering fusion has gone from impossible to inevitable. The rewards and social benefits across the world will be transformational and I look forward to this exciting new phase of growth on our roadmap to realising limitless energy for the long-term security of our planet.”

Samer gained extensive corporate experience working for the executive chairman of the Oxford-based group companies of Bishopsgate Investments Ltd, where he was responsible for small-business M&A deals and was heavily involved in commercial real estate investment, corporate restructuring and in its venture capital angel investment fund.

Tokamak Energy is the only private fusion company to have more than 10 years’ experience of designing, building and operating tokamaks. Enabled by its HTS magnet technology, the spherical tokamak design is more efficient than the traditional ring doughnut shape, with lower capital investment, operating costs and a smaller footprint. This is the optimal approach both scientifically and commercially, delivering the lowest levelized cost of energy.
