Role Overview

Tokamak Energy is actively developing the superconducting spherical tokamak (ST) as the best route to a commercial fusion power plant. Building on the success of ST40, our pulsed ST that recently achieved 100M degrees plasma, a world first for a spherical tokamak, we will build an intermediate device to derisk the technology and plasma physics (called ST-HTS) followed swiftly by a pilot plant (ST-E1), to demonstrate net electrical power output in the early 2030s.

These devices will push the boundaries of fusion knowledge and capability, and validate technologies in readiness for commercial exploitation.  As Chief Engineer, you will be in the driving seat of the design, build, commissioning and test of these devices, leading a highly-qualified team of engineers, designers and scientists, to bring these products.

In this role, you will:

  • Initially work closely with the acting Chief Engineer and Programme Manager to define the ST-HTS programme
  • Report to the Future Programme Director
  • Work with the Engineering & Technology Director and ST40 Programme Director to integrate technology developed off line and learning from ST40 into the HTS tokamaks
  • Lead a team of designers, analysts, engineers, and scientists for the tokamak programmes
  • Work across all business functions to fulfil the programme mission
  • Deliver a design through build and commissioning into operations, often with high levels of ambiguity and uncertainty
  • Effectively integrate new technology at low maturity levels and learning from other development activities across other projects and programmes
  • Actively adopt and encourage an agile, “Permission to Fail” approach to balancing innovation and risk and enhancing a learning culture
  • Lead the resolution of design and systems integration issues
  • Be the champion for the tokamak programme within the company
  • Be an advocate for safety at an operational and functional level, working closely with the Safety team
  • Own the technical authority for delivery the ST-HTS and ST-E1 programmes

Hazard-specific / Safety-critical duties

This job includes the following hazards or safety-critical activities which will require successful pre-employment health screening through our occupational health service before the successful candidate will be allowed to start work:

  • Driving on Company business
  • Supervising work on tokamaks
  • Travel outside of Europe or North America on company business

Requirements and attributes we value:

  • Degree qualified in an appropriate engineering or scientific discipline
  • Considerable experience and success delivering complex technology products at large scale
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of engineering design and development processes
  • Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience with magnetic confinement fusion technology
  • Experience in agile programme delivery environments
  • Able to balance the often conflicting requirements of rapid delivery and technical risk
  • A natural communicator who instils confidence and able to build collaborative relationships across the business and with suppliers and partners
  • A dynamic personality – confident, credible, and comfortable working across all levels of an advanced engineering/science team.
