The role

A position is available in the Divertor team for a Development Engineer. The successful candidate will be responsible for the technology development of divertor systems and other plasma-facing components. This includes novel materials and coolants for in-vessel tokamak components for present and future fusion devices at Tokamak Energy. The candidate will have a methodical but practical mindset, capable of evaluating and selecting emerging technologies through advanced analysis techniques, able to understand and deliver experimentally tested solutions to a high-quality standard; organised, self-driven and able to work to defined timescales.


  • Coordinate the execution of the divertor development plan related to the experimental validation and testing activities.
  • Hold responsibility of the divertor laboratory operations in matters of delivery, planning, logistics, quality, equipment and safety.
  • Preparation of relevant documentation conforming to PSSR regulations.
  • Design and analyse the divertor system and plasma-facing components test-beds in coordination with tokamak physics and engineering design activities, as required for the next generation of fusion devices.
  • Define and supervise the assessment and qualification procedure of plasma-facing components to be installed inside the tokamak vacuum enclosure.
  • Participate in the design of new tokamak components, coordinating the qualification and integrity monitoring, both in laboratory and during tokamak operations.
  • Responsible for leading work package 3 of the AMR project (approx. £1.5M) aiming to design a divertor for the next generation of Tokamak Energy’s machines
  • Interface and information management, liaising with physicists and engineers responsible for other tokamak systems’ R&D, power supplies, HTS magnet design and overall integration.
  • Monitoring external development on novel techniques for improving pumping and heat flux handling performance.
  • Liaising with external contractors and researchers for the supply of technology development hardware.

 Selection criteria

  • Degree in a relevant physics or engineering discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience running, checking, and validating thermo-mechanical analysis simulations and experiments.
  • Hands-on experience on testing and diagnostic equipment.
  • Experience working and contributing within a team of scientists and/or engineers.
  • Highly motivated to deliver against challenging objectives in a compressed timescale
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and technologies
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Organised approach to complex problems

 Desirable selection criteria

  • Experience designing and testing high-heat flux components for nuclear fusion environments.
  • Knowledge of vacuum design process, manufacturing and conditioning methods, and associated tools and standards.
  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling experience would be an advantage, in particular if including magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) effects.
  • Experience working in aerospace, nuclear, and/or fusion fields would be a plus.
