Overview of the role
As the Head of Electrical Engineering, you will be responsible for the specification, installation and operation of all major electrical systems at Tokamak Energy. The Electrical Engineering team supports and works closely with all other departments including Mechanical, Controls, Diagnostics, Instrumentation, HTS Magnets and Physics to deliver and operate equipment for our experimental spherical tokamak ST40 and other devices and rigs. You will lead and manage a large team of highly skilled individuals and will be responsible for ensuring they work effectively and are nurtured and supported to achieve high performance.
Main duties/role and responsibilities
- Manage the Electrical Engineering team covering technical leadership, resource allocation, workflow and safe working supervision, skills development & training and continuous improvement in the following key system areas:
- HV & LV power supply
- Electrical engineering services & infrastructure
- Fibre infrastructure & SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition)
- Functional Safety and functional safety systems
- Foster effective collaboration with all internal teams to ensure robust and complete electrical system requirements are defined
- Collaborate with external suppliers to ensure delivery against existing contracts and develop new suppliers that can support the strategic plan
- Define and implement engineering policies, standards and processes for electrical engineering at Tokamak Energy that are agile, robust and in line with quality and H&S regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with the Programme Management team and external suppliers to define an integrated activity plan and supporting resource allocation that delivers to the programme milestones.
- Ensure effective progress tracking and reporting for all electrical power systems including maintaining risks and issues logs and associated action plans
- Support ST40 plasma operations by training and allocating staff to the operations roster and owning the process and H&S requirements of the Engineer-in-Charge role.
- Define future technology strategy for Tokamak Electrical Power Systems and develop technology development plans to achieve future Tokamak requirements (ST40 and beyond)
- Define and manage budgets for the Electrical Engineering team
Hazard-specific / Safety-critical duties
This job includes the following hazards or safety-critical activities which will require successful pre-employment health screening through our occupational health service before the successful candidate will be allowed to start work:
- Driving on Company business
- Working with ionising radiation
- Working with electricity (LV & HV)
- Working with or in the vicinity of equipment that produces high magnetic fields
- Travel outside of Europe or North America on company business
- Expected training & accreditations: Electrical Engineering degree or equivalent, IOSH, BS7671 18th edition, BS EN 61508 or BS EN 61511
- Desirable training/accreditation: PLECS or similar Circuit simulation training, AutoCAD Electrical and or Solid Edge or similar 2D and 3D design systems
- Knowledge and experience in:
- designing, installing and operating electrical power systems for power supplies
- power supply topologies and switching semiconductor types
- high voltage and low voltage system understanding and basic design requirements
- pulsed power applications
- diagnosing problems from circuit diagrams and supporting engineers in circuit analysis
- electrical safety systems, stored energy safety, personnel safety systems and safety PLCs
- building electrical infrastructure planning
- SCADA systems and Modbus communications
- backup generators
- earthing systems
- fibre optic management and system integration
- Relevant technical experience from working on or around a similarly complex technical device as ST40 that enables the specific technical, operational, and H&S considerations to be quickly learned and then developed with innovation and creativity
- Experience of working in an environment with multiple hazards and using the right behaviours, tools and processes (e.g. hazard analysis, risk assessments) to lead the team in effectively managing and controlling the risks
- Experience of managing a team of skilled and technically capable individuals and a proven track record of building strong teams that harness the collective strengths and skills to work as one
- Strong people skills and a team player who demonstrates empathy and is open to receiving and giving positive challenge
- Adaptable and resilient, with the ability to deal with ambiguity and strong drive and energy to deliver results
