HTS Power Electronics Engineer

Location: Milton Park, Oxfordshire, UK
Salary: COMPETITIVE

Background

Tokamak Energy aims to accelerate the development of fusion energy by combining two emerging technologies – spherical tokamaks and high temperature superconductors (HTS).

The company was originally established in 2009 to design and develop small spherical tokamaks and compact fusion reactors for a range of applications.  Since then, the Company has unlocked a new route to scalable fusion power that is cost-effective and does not require huge infrastructure and capital expenditure. The technology will revolutionise the world’s energy production – it will be possible to produce more energy, more cheaply and with fewer harmful side effects (e.g. with no long term nuclear waste or carbon emissions). Tokamak Energy aims to accelerate the development of fusion energy by combining two emerging technologies – spherical tokamaks and HTS. The company’s innovation has been featured on Channel 4 news, BBC News Click and Reuters news channel and they received a Technology Pioneer Award at the World Economic Forum on 2016. This is the chance to join a fast-growing high technology company with an agile, dynamic team and to tackle the challenge of a lifetime.

The Role

A position is available in the HTS magnet team for an Electrical / Electronics Engineer with experience of high power switched mode inverter design, build and test, including pulsed power systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and manufacture of power electronic systems associated with prototype tokamak demonstrators, as well as installation and commissioning of the controls, diagnostics and safety systems for the ST-F1 programme. A key target is the development of very high current (20-100 kA) power supplies for high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets, including cryogenic components. This is an exciting opportunity to participate in pioneering HTS magnet development at Tokamak Energy.

The successful candidate will have a methodical, analytic mindset, and be able to design power electronic equipment in rigorous detail. They should be organised, self driven and able to work to defined timescales. Must demonstrate project management skills to ensure delivery of manufactured assemblies on time. Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team of engineers designing new and complex devices.

Key duties will include

  •  Design of high current superconducting magnet power supplies and high voltage pulsed power supplies.
  • Guiding installation and commissioning of the power supplies on the tokamak.
  • Developing HTS / cryogenic pulsed power components.
  • Developing safety case, risk assessments and installation method statements for proposed installations.
  • Running power electronic simulation studies using PLECSTM.
  • Fast-tracking novel circuit ideas from concept through prototypes to real tokamak power systems.
  • Design and development of small scale prototypes to demonstrate technology, hardware and methods needed for power supplies for large HTS magnets, including design of 100 kA-class cables and joints, and magnet protection.
  • Liaising with other engineers responsible for HTS conductor characterization, tokamak physics, cryogenics, mechanical integration.
  • Internally the post holder will report to the HTS Magnet Development manager and liaise with the Electrical Engineering Group manager, Cryogenic Systems engineer, and other mechanical, electrical and design engineers and working within the Company.
  • Externally the post holder will liaise with manufacturers, component suppliers and technical consultants in industry and academia.
  • The post will involve occasional travel within the UK and overseas.
  • Highly motivated to deliver against challenging objectives in a compressed timescale.
  • Ability to contribute effectively in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and technologies.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Organized approach to complex problems.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Proactive attitude.
  • Self-starting and self-reliant.
  • Ability to devise and operate effective project schedules.
  • Creativity and innovation.

 Essential Criteria

  •  PhD, Degree or substantial equivalent experience in Electrical or Electronic Engineering.
  • At least two years’ relevant experience at an appropriate level in an industrial manufacturing or technology prototyping environment.
  • Power electronics experience, including simulation and design, and hands-on experience, using SCRs, IGBTs, Supercapacitors and other power components.
  • Experience with PSPICE, PLECS or equivalent circuit design software.
  • Fully conversant with engineering drawings and circuit diagrams.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Knowledge of current manufacturing methods and materials, understanding and application of BS7671 and Electricity Safety. Fully conversant with engineering drawings.
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplied team of scientists and/or engineers.
  • Previous experience within a scientific or industrial product development facility.

Desirable Criteria

  •  Experience very high current pulsed resistive and/or superconducting power supplies.
  • PCB Creation, using OrCad, EagleCad or other.
  • Experience in high voltage and/or high current pulsed power supplies and topologies.
  • Experience in embedded device and/or FPGA programming.
  • Experience in PLC and communication interfacing.
  • Earthing system experience.
  • Experience of using temperature monitoring (PT100, PT1000, Thermocouple) systems.
  • The post will involve occasional travel within the UK and overseas.
  • CAD experience.
  • Good fault finding skills using electronic test equipment.
  • Understanding and awareness of intellectual property.

Benefits

  •  25 days holiday (plus bank holidays)
  • Company pension scheme
  • Eligible for company share option scheme after 1 years’ service
  • Compnay bonus scheme, discretionary, dependant on performance
