Overview of the role
We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer to work on our existing Tokamak and help conceive and design the next generations of machine. We are looking for a creative engineer, with excellent analysis skills, to undertake a very varied range of mechanical engineering design and analysis. This includes high power pulsed copper magnets, high temperature superconducting magnets, UHV chambers, and cryogenic structures.
The candidate will be part of a team which includes plasma physicists, CAD designers, cryogenics engineers, radiation specialists and others. An interest in physics is essential to facilitate communication and interpretation of the requirements placed on the mechanical engineering team. The role requires a self-sufficient engineer with the ability to conceive, design (with good knowledge of appropriate manufacturing techniques) and analyse structures from first principles.
The ability to use FEA software and communicate and report the results clearly and concisely is required. A good understanding and experience of design for manufacture in low volume, high value scientific industries would be preferred.
In this role, you will:
- Creatively solve mechanical engineering problems.
- Design low volume, highly stressed structures, which may be subject to vacuum, thermal, ionising radiation and EM loads.
- Use ANSYS FEA software to analyse new and existing designs and assess fitness for purpose.
- Write clear, readable reports and documenting all work including FEA analysis and design work.
- Choose the appropriate manufacturing techniques to ensure that the designs can be made quickly and economically.
- Communicate and liaise with other engineers, physicists and designers.
- Choose and specify materials for use in the highly varied and challenging environments presented by a tokamak.
Hazard-specific / Safety-critical duties
This job includes the following hazards or safety-critical activities which will require successful pre-employment health screening through our occupational health service before the successful candidate will be allowed to start work:
- Work in hot or cold environments
- Driving on Company business
- Working with ionising radiation
- Working with or in the vicinity of equipment that produces high magnetic fields
- Working with materials that are managed under the control of substances hazardous to health regulations (COSHH)
- Travel outside of Europe or North America on company business
Requirements and attributes we value:
- Mechanical Engineering degree or equivalent skills and experience.
- Finite Element Analysis experience, preferable with Ansys, for mechanical/structural, thermal, and (ideally) electromagnetic applications.
- Applying fundamental engineering understanding and scientific principles to solve complex, novel problems.
- Knowledge and experience of manufacturing methods typically used for low volume, high value scientific industries.
- Writing clear reports and communicating complex ideas effectively.
