Overview of the role

The successful candidate will own the development of materials for application in one or more fusion reactor system – including plasma-facing materials, tritium barriers, structural alloys/composites, and advanced radiation shielding (UHTC’s, Cermets, and metal-hydrides).

In this role, you will:

  • Engage in internal R&D activities and participate in external collaborations with academia and industrial partners for developing materials
  • Provide input into specific technology development roadmaps, budgets and risk registers – ensuring risks, costs and resources have adequate governance and technical oversight
  • Act as a Technical Specialist to mature the TRL and MRL of materials, which meets environmental, regulatory, functional and commercial requirements through a combination of assured analysis, experimentation, characterisation, testing, prototyping & demonstration as well as exercising sound engineering judgement.
  • Identify, develop, and protect Intellectual Property with a view to commercialisation of relevant technology

Requirements and attributes we value:

  • Technical excellence in the development, characterisation, and qualification of materials for a new application in a harsh environment – particularly in a high radiation fields such as HEPP, fission, or space applications – and a solid understanding of the types of material properties and characteristics needed for various functions in a fusion reactor.
  • A mastery in understanding the mechanisms of how material properties may change in an environment consisting of high levels of radiation, temperature, and other environmental factors – including a comprehensive understanding of the challenges posed by embrittlement (whether induced by radiation, liquid metals, or hydrogen/helium), swelling, creep, erosion, corrosion, and activation/transmutation; and how these challenges may be overcome by a combination of modelling/analysis, testing/qualification and applied materials science.
  • Specialism in one or more of the following areas: generating materials specifications, material computational techniques (e.g. ab-initio Density Functional Theory, Molecular Dynamics, Molecular Mechanics) manufacturing processes, joining techniques, advanced manufacturing methods, structural alloys, acceptance tests, characterisation or qualification programmes, surveillance programmes, irradiation campaigns and PIE
  • A sound understanding with relevant applied experience of the linkage between Process > Structure > Property > Performance in materials engineering.
  • A proven ability to communicate technical and non-technical information effectively and persuasively at all levels: to senior management, stakeholders, collaborators, colleagues and staff
  • Experience in managing complex engineering projects covering applied analysis, research, and hardware design and demonstration – ideally in developing new materials for use in a radiation environment
  • A familiarity with risk, cost and project management techniques is desirable
  • A good level of knowledge of the principles of magnetically confined fusion and the technical challenges to be overcome to make fusion energy a reality – as evidenced by either academic qualifications or professional experience in fusion science or a related area.
  • Knowledge of applicable international codes, regulations and good practices in the area of nuclear structural containment materials and experience of compliance with the same
  • An ability to organise one’s work independently without close supervision, being proactive in solving problems and well-reasoned decision-making skills would be strongly desirable.
  • A basic awareness of the principles of Intellectual Property law and how businesses may protect their Intellectual Property would be desirable. The ideal candidate will have been listed as an inventor on multiple successful patent applications
  • An academic qualification up to Masters or PhD level in Materials Science or a related area would be appropriate for this role – or equivalent vocational experience, which may be evidenced, for example, by holding an active Chartership in Physics and/or Engineering (CPhys / CEng) or international equivalents.
