Overview of the role

The Systems Architect is a major stakeholder in the logical and physical architecture of the tokamak project and is expected to provide hands-on technical leadership for the structural design of software and systems.

We are in a transition phase to enable us to develop control systems within a quality framework so the candidate must be a self-starter comfortable with working in, and contributing to, a changing environment. The Systems Architect will be central to the choice and development of new processes, methodologies and toolsets and must be open to the development of new ways of working.

There is an ongoing need for the maintenance and support of existing control systems, predominantly built using NI LabVIEW, so a capability and willingness to perform this role is also required.

Main duties/role and responsibilities


  • Understanding requirements from multiple stakeholders and domains to recommend suitable technologies and propose a development process.
  • Collaborating with technical leads in other teams to make logical and physical architectural decisions that affect the whole project.
  • Producing logical and physical breakdown diagrams of systems, subsystems, and components; detailing interactions, interfaces (including component, environmental, user interfaces), and the technologies and resources to be used in its design and implementation.

Strategy and Planning

  • Developing and implementing policy and guidance on best practice. Conducting code and technology reviews and producing technical reports ensuring adherence to accepted internal standards.
  • Developing and recommending technology and toolkits.
  • Working towards Quality Standards.
  • Working with Systems Engineers to develop a process of work for integrating systems into the larger tokamak projects.
  • Using diagrams and models to discuss problems and solutions with stakeholders.
  • Cost / benefit analysis.

Continuous Integration

  • Being a major stakeholder of the company git repository. Support software / modelling developers and other git users.
  • Developing and automating CI/CD strategies that support the ongoing efforts of developing a Quality Process.
  • Contributing to code and model development.

Integrity of Systems

  • Developing telemetry for qualifying the reliability and availability of systems.
  • Mitigating high level risk through component redundancy.
  • Researching new technologies and conducting periodic design reviews and making recommendations for improving or altering systems.

Hazard-specific / Safety-critical duties

This job includes the following hazards or safety-critical activities:

  • Night working (11pm-6am)
  • Work in hot or cold environments
  • Driving on Company business
  • Working with ionising radiation
  • Working with electricity (LV & HV)
  • Work with cryogenic fluids including liquid nitrogen
  • Working with or in the vicinity of equipment that produces high magnetic fields
  • Working with class 3B or 4 lasers
  • Working with materials that are managed under the control of substances hazardous to health regulations (COSHH)
  • Travel outside of Europe or North America on company business

Experience required

  • Good degree in a technical discipline (Engineering/Physics etc.)
  • Use of Mathworks tools (Matlab, Simulink, Stateflow)
  • Use of NI Tools (Labview)
  • Knowledge of Systems Engineering tools.
  • Working knowledge of UML and SysML diagrams useful.
  • Experience of interacting across a range of engineering disciplines e.g., mechanical, nuclear, electrical, software, data analysis, etc.
  • Good communication skills, both orally and written.
  • Experience of technical leadership useful.
