Tokamak Energy Welcomes UK Government’s Fusion Strategy & Green Paper on Regulation

Tokamak Energy is delighted to see the UK government’s new Fusion Strategy and Green paper on regulation announced today.

It’s exciting news for UK fusion as it highlights a smooth pathway for regulating and stimulating a sector that aims to provide low cost, limitless and clean energy to the world. This is especially important in the run-up to COP26.

We welcome the government’s endorsement of the Regulatory Horizons Council’s recommendations for fusion regulation to be led by the Environment Agency and the Health & Safety Executive.

This sensible approach underscores fusion’s unique characteristics as a safe and secure energy source and gives confidence to investors that commercial fusion is on the horizon, thereby further accelerating the development of private fusion energy ventures.

The clarity of regulation for spherical tokamaks, as outlined in the Strategy and Green paper, is particularly timely. The benefits of spherical tokamaks for commercial fusion energy have been well documented – Tokamak Energy’s technological approach of a spherical tokamak with high temperature superconducting magnets is further endorsed by this government announcement.

We welcome the emerging policy landscape to support private fusion ventures. We would now like government to follow up to build on the Fusion Strategy and Green paper with an investment framework that further supports commercial fusion energy.

Above all, today’s announcement shows the government’s clear commitment to establish the UK as an international leader in fusion – scientifically and commercially.
